Narrowboat Kodran

Kodran is a 60′ Derwent class cruiser-stern canal boat providing superb narrowboat holiday accommodation. Built and fit-out by JD Boat Services, Gailey in Staffordshire, Kodran has been part of their hire fleet ever since.

We kicked the tyres in 2017 and now are Kodran’s proud owners. We made him all ship-shape for the 2018 hire season. You can see how his makeover went in pictures here.

  • Preparing narrowboat Kodran for a canal boat holiday

Kodran’s layout allows up to 6 adults to be accommodated comfortably between two, double berth cabins and a double berth-converting dining area. There’s a 3rd berth in the dining area which makes accommodating two families with young children a breeze!

Our sleeping preference is using the 3 berths in the saloon as a Cross-King bed.

AND, we discovered while using Kodran in Spring 2018 that the 3rd berth in the dinette allows for a very serviceable CROSS KING-sized bed!

That’s where we sleep when we’re aboard!

Cabin configurations

Kodran’s accommodation was designed for the flexible needs of the narrowboat holiday. We can configure each of the cabins with either a double bed or 2 singles for complete satisfaction no matter who makes up your holiday group.

Just let us know beforehand and it’ll be setup for when you arrive.

Sheets, lightweight but cosy duvets, and pillows are provided for any of the layouts below:

1st layout – 2X double berth cabins plus convertible 2+1 dinette

2nd layout – 2X rear cabin singles, 1X mid-cabin double plus convertible 2+1 dinette

3rd layout – 1X rear cabin double, 2X mid-cabin singles plus convertible 2+1 dinette

4th layout – 2X 2 single berth cabins plus convertible 2+1 dinette

End-of-day configurable privacy

The wardrobe doors in each bedroom double as cabin doors for complete privacy at the end of the day and each has private access to one of the 2 washrooms onboard. The main washroom at Kodran’s midships has a hip-bath with shower over so you can make good use of the plentiful hot water produced while cruising.

We supply the toiletries and towels.

All the pots, pans, kitchen utensils, dishes, cups, glasses and cutlery you’ll need for your vacation afloat are provided. Since this is England, there’s a tea pot for those traditional afternoon teas. But we hope you’ll also appreciate the stove top espresso pot and French press for those morning coffees.

We’ll provide you with tea bags and coffee to get you started!

All hands on-deck!

Along for the Ride: Dad hanging with “the Captain” – Staffs and Worcester canal, August 2018

Kodran’s cruiser stern is ideal for socializing with the Captain. There’s plenty of space for a couple of traditional deck chairs and a picnic table for cocktails on deck once moored.

The Well Deck at the front of Kodran has fixed seating for relaxing with a book while cruising and has a great water-level vantage point for communing with the ducks.

Just make sure you’re alert if on lookout duty for oncoming boats!

You can find all the Booking Details here. And if we still haven’t wetted your appetite, there’s more tips on our Home Page and FAQs.

The southern end of the Shropshire Union canal joins with the Staffs and Worcester in a “T” at Autherley Junction. A stop lock of less than 6” drop separates the two canals and, unusually, allows the Shroppie to empty into it’s older cousin rather than preserving the water level in the pound that stretches back to Wheaton Aston, some 10 miles northwest.

  1. Fabulous time on board the Kodran as a family of 6. The boat had everything we could ever need and the small problems we encountered were sorted swiftly. Handover at Jd boat services was swift and they were very friendly as was communication from Mike the owner.I would definitely book this boat again in the future

    1. We’d welcome you back too Amanda; yes, the team at Gailey bend over backwards to solve even the smallest concerns (turns out the smoke detector doesn’t use a regular battery!)

  2. We have just spent a fantastic week on Kodran cruising the Staffs & Worcester and Trent & Mersey canals. The service at the yard was good, the boat was presented to us in a very clean condition and the induction was thorough and professional. We found the boat to be well equipped and met all the needs of our party. Clean linen and towels, a welcome pack plus other nice touches such as a tv and radio, maps, waterproofs and umbrellas. Would throughly recommend to anyone wanting some time on the canals.
